Why Don’t More People Use Car Covers
Question: If car covers are so great, why don’t more people use them?
Answer: The number one reason that people don’t use car covers is because they don’t feel it’s necessary for their vehicles. If you drive around your most neighborhoods you will find that most people don’t use car covers. Additionally most people don’t keep their vehicles clean, periodically change their oil, or maintain their vehicle. According to a Shell survey, less than 24% of Americans perform routine maintenance on their vehicles. A quick look out on the road will show you exactly how we treat our vehicles. A quick look on the side of most highways will also give you a clue as to how we treat our vehicles. Poor maintenance inside and out of your vehicle translates to safety and performance issues on the road, and while these same conditions are acceptable here, they would not be ok in other countries such as Germany. By looking into car covers you are saying I care about your car and are willing to take the necessary steps to maintain my vehicle!
Furthermore, people have a tendency to rush from place to place, attempting to squeeze out time from certain task such as cooking (evidenced by tv dinners) or cleaning (evidenced by robotic vacuum cleaners and self cleaning shower devices) in order to have more time for things such as twittering or their television shows. Maintaining their vehicles has become more of a chore, almost seen as lower on the priority totem pole because the car still gets them from point A to point B (preventative vs. reactive).
Moreover miseducation about car covers reduces their use. They aren’t just for people with expensive vehicles, and most car covers are not that expensive. There are also lightweight car covers that are simple to slip on and off and even ones that are machine washable! Of course, in order to use a car cover properly you should assure that your car is clean. Dirt or dust underneath the carcover can cause micro-abrasions, scratching the clear coat of your car which requires minimal work. With a quality car cover and a clean vehicle you can help extend the life of your vehicle!
